With the growing popularity of matcha lattes, whether it’s served hot or iced, we thought we’d share our best tips for making a delicious matcha latte, while also answering the most common questions and pointing out frequent preparation mistakes.
Adjust the dosage for iced lattes
One of the most common mistakes is using the same amount of matcha for both hot and iced lattes. We recommend doubling the amount of matcha powder (two teaspoons instead of one) when serving an iced latte.
The reason is simple: in a hot latte, the milk is frothed and expands. This is not the case for an iced latte, which therefore contains more milk, altering the milk-to-matcha ratio. Without increasing the matcha dose, the flavor will be diluted. By adjusting the quantity, you’ll get a richer, more flavourful iced latte.
Avoid clumps
You may have noticed clumps in your matcha, even after carefully whisking it with a traditional bamboo whisk (chasen). This is not related to the matcha’s quality or properties. Simply shaking the bag during transport or storage can increase the risk of clumps.
These clumps can be unpleasant in texture and diminish the drink’s appearance. The only effective way to avoid them is to sift the matcha. Instead of sifting before every preparation (which can be tedious), we suggest sifting the entire amount when you fill your matcha container. That way, you’ll have pre-sifted matcha ready to use.
Maximize freshness
To best preserve your matcha’s freshness, keep only a small container at room temperature (opaque and airtight—absolutely avoid glass), and store the rest in its original packaging in the refrigerator or freezer. This slows oxidation and helps maintain quality and bright colour.
For an even tastier hot latte
The recommended dose for a 10–12 oz latte is 1 teaspoon (2 g) for a balanced flavour that pleases most people. However, matcha enthusiasts often prefer a more intense taste.
Our team’s tasting tests revealed that 2.5 g struck the perfect balance between intensity and flavour harmony. If you want to offer a latte that will delight serious matcha lovers, consider slightly increasing the dose.
Other factors to consider
Other elements can influence the result, such as the quality and type of milk used, the amount of sugar, the frothing technique (for hot lattes), and more. We encourage you to follow our recommendations or experiment to find the combination that works best for you.
